Amsterdam (spring 2005) - In the course of the 17th century the famous crescent shape of the Amsterdam city centre was designed and realised resulting in the unique ring of canals. A number of narrow streets and canals, fanning out from the centre of the crescent, traversed the network of concentric semicircular canals. The Venice of the North consists of approx. 90 islands, separated by some 100 kilometres of canals and linked by about 400 stone bridges.

About 20,000 buildings make up the historical city centre (800 hectares). One third was built before 1850. Amsterdam is not a city of churches and palaces, but of monumental mansions. The only two houses in Amsterdam worthy of the name palace are the Royal Palace in the Dam Square and the Trippenhuis, Kloveniersburgwal 29.

London (spring 2005) - Georgian and Victorian London was devastated by the Luftwaffe during the WWII. After the war, ugly housing and low-cost developments were thrown up on the bomb sites. In the 1980s, decade of Thatcherite confidence and deregulation, the Docklands were rediscovered by a new wave of property developers, who proved to be only marginally more discriminating than the Luftwaffe. London regained its swinging reputation in the 1990s with Tony Blair and Ken Livingstone (May 2000). The face of the city changed with the construction of the Millennium Dome, the London Eye observation wheel, the Tate Modern and the creation of the British Museum's Great Court. However, London's cost of living outdoes itself year after year; the gap between the haves and have-nots looms ever larger.

Oxford and Cambridge (spring 2006) - The University of Oxford and the University of Cambridge, collectively known as Oxbridge, are the two oldest and most famous universities in Britain. Both were founded more than 750 years ago, and between them have produced a large number of Britain's most prominent scientists, writers, and politicians. The competition between Oxford and Cambridge also has a long history, dating back to the days when Cambridge was founded by dissident scholars from Oxford.

Paris & French Riviera (autumn 2007) - France is noted for its cosmopolitan, civilized approach to life, combined with great concern for style, fashion and appearances, but generalizations are not without risk. Huge differences exist in life style and world view between various 'elites' and 'lower' people, especially if they run parallel with the wide gap between Paris and what is sometimes called 'le desert Français' or 'la Frane profonde'. The French are often perceived as taking a great pride in the national identity and positive achievements of France. Notion of the exception Française is more explicit in France than in any other countries. The culture of France is diverse, reflecting regional differences as well as the influence of recent immigration.

French culture has played an important role with universalist pretensions for centuries, with Paris as a world center of high culture. Any perceived decline in cultural status is a matter of national concern. Cultural issues are more integrated in the body politic than elsewhere.

Jura & Alps (winter 2007) - The Alps is France's third most popular tourist region, following Paris and the Côte d'Azur, and it is Europe's largest mountain range. The Alps spread over France, Italy and Switzerland, with the highest peaks being on the eastern edge and forming a formidable natural barrier with Italy. Isère is the highest département, followed by Hautes-Alpes and Savoie. Mont Blanc in Haute-Savoie stands at 4,807m (15,767ft) and is the tallest mountain in Europe.

Separated from the Alps by Lake Geneva (Lac Léman), the Franche-Comté region contains the Jura mountains to the south and borders the Vosges mountains on the north side. The Jura mountains are more accessible, yet less exploited by tourism, than the Alps and are thus extremely popular with winter sports fans, nature lovers and ramblers. The scenery is largely green and unspoilt and the region is well endowed with rolling fields, pine forests, lakes and towering mountains.
