Kakadu and its floodplains such as Yellow Water Billabong undergo dramatic seasonal changes. Following the wet season rains, a sea of shallow freshwater spreads over the plains for hundreds of square kilometers. As the foodplains starts to dry (from the Yegge season), waterbirds and saltwater crocodiles seek refuges in the remaining wet areas. This gallery introduces the Yellow Water Billabong during the Yegge season (cool but still humid season from May to mid June).
Moving to arboriginal culture, Bathurst islands are quite original due to their isolation (80 km North Darwin, Australia). The indigenous people from Tiwi island have developed an original art. This culture cannot be found anywhere else. The rock art discovered in Northern Territories (ie. Nourlangie, Ubirr and Arnhem land is unique. Australian Aborigines represents the longest continuously practiced series of artistic traditions anywhere in the world. Rock painting had several functions in historic times. Images were created to increase the population of game animals or for use in magic. Depictions of important Dreaming beings are common, as well as secular paintings made for amusement. Please have also a look to pictures from “Kuranda” (close to Cairns), aboriginal word for “village in the rainforest”.
