Guatemala (autumn 2004) - Mountainous, heavily forested and dotted with Mayan ruins, lakes, volcanoes, orchids and exotic birds, Central America is lucky to have Guatemala. Guatemala's beauty and strength of identity have not been always accompanied by cohesion and prosperity. In 1996 the country emerged from a 36-year-long civil war in which more than 200,000 people were killed or disappeared.
Now, the country intends to be opened wider and wider to tourism. Government leverage on key locations such as Tikal, Atitlan and Antigua. In the next 10 years, the Maya site "El Mirador" may be an eldorado for the Tourism in Central America.
